“There are times when all the world's asleep
The questions run too deep
For such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned?
I know it sounds absurd
Please tell me who I am”
The Logical Song by Supertramp
When someone asked you what you want you wanted to be as a child, what was your answer? How did that change when you became a teenager and then a young adult in college or university? Did you change your answer again when you got married and had a family? Who do you think you are today?
What we think and believe about ourselves matters so much. it shapes our daily choices and transforms our lives through a collection of activities we do or do not engage in. Stopping to think about what we wanted in the past as children and now as adults are helpful to figure out the present and future life we want for ourselves.
Start today and figure yourself out by asking yourself these questions and writing down the answers:
What did I want to be when I grew up and what were my reasons?
Who did I look up to then and who do I respect/admire today?
How did I describe myself in high school and what would I say about my identity today?
Am I the kind of person I thought I should be when I was younger? Describe how you do or do not meet your childhood expectations.
How do I think I need to change to align with the person I believe I should be in the future?
So, what do you think about your answers to the brief identity questions above? I hope you are starting to figure out what makes you the person you are as well as the kind of person you want to be next. Make it Awesome!
